This has long been the nation’s home away from home, a place where it has won 21 of 36 matches. The fifth-ranked Proteas aren’t expected to make it out of the group alive, but it’s that lack of expectation which can release the shackles and make South Africa a threat at the World Cup. The elephant in the room, however, is that South Africa is pitted in the group of death which includes Australia, England and defending champions, the West Indies. The Proteas have become accustomed to winning ways in recent times and will head into the World Cup off the back of three-consecutive series wins which came over the West Indies, Ireland and Sri Lanka.
It’s not that hard to imagine, is it? Add in the firepower of Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins, and the constantly improving spin partnership of Adam Zampa and Ashton Agar and it’s easy to picture Australia winning it all for the first time. Picture Aaron Finch and David Warner setting up the innings, Mitch Marsh or Steve Smith turning the screws, and Glenn Maxwell or Marcus Stoinis going berserk somewhere in there. But on its day, this is an outfit that will be awfully hard to beat. Australia simply doesn’t have the record to back that up, nor does its biggest stars play enough international T20 cricket. By no means should Justin Langer’s side be considered one of the favourites. Australia can certainly win the World Cup this year.

And besides, the West Indies have since blooded some quality players under 30, such as Shimron Hetmyer with the bat and Hayden Walsh Jnr, who destroyed Australia with the ball this year. It has the feel of a team somewhat holding onto the past – especially with Gayle still around - but the big-game experience they bring is invaluable. From that winning XI, 42-year-old Chris Gayle, 38-year-old Dwayne Bravo, 36-year-old Lendl Simmons and 33-year-old Andre Russell still remain.
